The Story Behind Operation Dreams
Inspired by IPS Officer Sandeep Chaudhary
While journeying through the valleys of Kashmir, I had the profound privilege of meeting IPS Officer Sandeep Chaudhary—a 2012-batch officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre, hailing from Punjab. Known for his unwavering commitment to community upliftment, Chaudhary launched the original 'Operation Dreams' in 2018 during his posting as Superintendent of Police in South Jammu.
What began as a modest initiative in his office chamber quickly grew into a beacon of hope. Starting with just 10 aspiring sub-inspectors, the program expanded to over 150 students from Jammu, Ladakh, and beyond—including young women—preparing for civil services, banking, and police exams. Despite his demanding role combating drugs and militancy (registering over 220 FIRs under NDPS Act), Chaudhary dedicated two hours every morning to free coaching, sharing his own story of cracking UPSC without college or formal coaching—relying on self-study through IGNOU and guidance from friends.
He continued the program in militancy-hit areas like Shopian and Anantnag, aiming to channel youth energy positively and bridge police-community gaps. 'Operation Dreams' wasn't just about exams; it was about democratizing education, inspiring resilience, and rewriting futures for the underserved.
Though the program was later discontinued due to his evolving postings and challenges in the region, Chaudhary's legacy endures. His TEDx talk, 'Crack Competitive Exams/UPSC Without Coaching/College,' encapsulates his philosophy: success through grit and self-belief.
